The Newton Correctional Facility is located five miles south of Newton on a 1,476-acre tract of land and includes a minimum-security facility as well as a medium security facility.  The Sexual Offender Treatment Program (SOTP) at the Newton Correctional Facility has been developed on the basic tenet that sexual deviance is a complicated, multi-dimensional behavioral disorder.  The SOTP at Newton Correctional Facility provides programming that attempts to help men who have committed sexual offenses learn how to deal with their deviant thoughts, feelings, and behavior to substitute for the inappropriate and irresponsible behavior, which led to the offense.  Treatment intervention, which is provided through group therapy and individual counseling as appropriate, focuses on assisting the individual to accept responsibility, increase recognition, institute change and manage sexually deviant thoughts, attitudes, and behavior.

The Correctional Release Center currently houses offenders in a variety of of low-secure living areas and is charged with preparing offenders of Iowa’s correctional institutions for parole, work release or discharge.  Correctional Release Center programs emphasizes the need for individuals to take responsibility for their own actions and fall into two primary categories: release preparation and cognitive behavioral programming.

Adult Basic Education, HiSET classes, and special education are provided for eligible individuals.  Offender work may include on-grounds work assignments or, if approved, participation in community service work programs at state agencies or private sector employment.  Offenders involved in community service work programs are transported to work sites each day and work under the supervision of non-correctional state employees.
