Survivors of crime may sometimes wish to meet directly with the offender involved in their case. A facilitated, in-person meeting is an option. VOD is a voluntary program that involves thorough planning and preparation with a trained facilitator.
Other VOD Options |
---|
Many survivors wish to participate in a VOD but prefer not to have an in-person meeting. Our office can assist by facilitating other forms of communication, such as arranging a virtual meeting or delivering a letter or a list of questions from the victim to the offender. |
Reasons Victims Choose to Participate in VOD |
---|
· Express the loss, trauma, and other impacts of the offense directly to the person responsible
· Gain a deeper understanding about the incident, the person who committed the crime, and have questions answered
· Experience a greater sense of healing |
Outcomes for Offenders |
---|
· Gain a deeper understanding of the harm suffered by victims
· Have an opportunity to acknowledge the harm, express accountability, and explore ways to potentially “make things right”
· Work toward repairing some of the harm caused by the offense |
Apology Letter Bank |
---|
VOD is a victim-centered program and only accepts referrals from victims/survivors. An alternative for offenders who wish to express an apology may participate in the Apology Letter Bank program. Victims can contact our office to inquire if the person involved in their case has submitted a letter. |
