DES MOINES – The Iowa Department of Corrections (DOC) is pleased to announce Shannon Archer as its Legal Counsel. Archer brings a wealth of legal experience, having served as an Assistant Attorney General in the Iowa Attorney General’s Office Civil Litigation Division and the Polk County Attorney's Office. Her extensive expertise in litigation, advocacy, and education uniquely positions her to contribute significantly to the DOC’s mission of promoting public safety and justice.
“Shannon's legal acumen and dedication to justice make her an extraordinary addition to our team," said General Counsel Michael Savala. "Her proven ability to navigate complex legal landscapes and her passion for victim advocacy align perfectly with the values and goals of the Department of Corrections. We are excited to have her on board and confident she will have a profound impact on our organization.”
Throughout her career, Archer has conducted over 50 jury trials, including multiple homicide cases, and has become a nationally recognized expert and educator on domestic violence, sexual abuse, and related legal challenges. Archer earned her law degree with honors from Drake University and a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics, cum laude, from Wartburg College.
