The Iowa Department of Corrections (DOC) announced the appointment of Darin Cox as the Director of the 5th District in Dec. 2024. Cox brings more than 28 years of experience in corrections, with extensive leadership roles across institutional operations, community-based corrections (CBC), and central office.

Cox’s career with the IDOC has been marked by a commitment to operational excellence, public safety, and collaborative leadership. He has held pivotal positions, including Assistant Deputy Director of Institutional Operations, Public Service Manager, and Executive Officer for the 5th District. In each role, Cox has demonstrated a focus on enhancing security, fostering innovative programming, and building strong relationships across teams.

Cox's responsibilities will include overseeing the district’s operations, fostering community partnerships, and implementing innovative strategies to ensure effective supervision and rehabilitation of individuals under correctional supervision. He will also work closely with staff to maintain the district’s strong commitment to public safety and the well-being of Iowa communities.

"I was born and raised in Guthrie and Dallas Counties and have spent most of my adult life in Polk County," said Cox. "It is an honor to have the opportunity to lead this District's correctional services and give back to the communities that have shaped me. I am excited to work alongside a dedicated team to make a positive impact and drive meaningful change."

Cox holds a Bachelor of Science in Sociology with a minor in Criminal Justice from Iowa State University and has completed advanced leadership training through the Iowa Department of Corrections.
