DES MOINES — The Iowa Department of Corrections is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Usha Chhatlani as the Department’s new Mental Health Director. She officially began her duties on June 6, 2025, and will be based at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center (IMCC).
Dr. Chhatlani brings more than seven years of psychiatric experience to the role, most recently serving as section chief of psychiatry in an inpatient county hospital setting. She has led multidisciplinary teams, developed integrated care strategies, and worked extensively with underserved and vulnerable populations. Her strengths include coordinating care across systems and improving clinical outcomes through collaborative, person-centered approaches.
"Mental health is a critical component of successful reentry and rehabilitation," said DOC Director Dr. Beth Skinner. "Dr. Chhatlani’s experience, passion, and leadership in behavioral health make her the right person to help us continue transforming our system. We are thrilled to welcome her to the team."
Dr. Chhatlani’s appointment reflects the Department’s continued investment in improving mental health services across Iowa’s correctional facilities. In this role, she will provide clinical leadership, strategic guidance, and oversight of mental health services statewide.
"Dr. Chhatlani’s arrival marks a major step forward in our ability to provide comprehensive, evidence-based care for those with mental health needs in our system," said Dr. Michael Riley, Health Services Administrator. Throughout her career, Dr. Chhatlani has been a strong advocate for trauma-informed care and improving access to mental health resources within public institutions.
"I am honored to join the Iowa Department of Corrections and support the important mission of helping individuals heal and rebuild their lives," said Dr. Usha Chhatlani.
