DES MOINES – The Iowa Department of Corrections is pleased to announce the hiring of Sonya Sellmeyer as the Department of Investigative Services Supervisor. Sellmeyer brings a strong background in public service and consumer advocacy to the DOC.
Sellmeyer earned her Bachelor of Science degree in sociology from the University of Iowa and later obtained her paralegal degree from Kirkwood Community College. She began her career with the Iowa Insurance Division, where she spent nine years assisting Iowa consumers with investment complaints.
“Sonya’s experience and passion for helping others align perfectly with the DOC’s mission," said Director Beth Skinner. "We look forward to the leadership and perspective she will bring to this important role.”
Sellmeyer then transitioned to the Iowa Attorney General’s Office, working on cases involving the civil commitment of sex offenders. In 2018, Sonya returned to the Insurance Division as the Consumer Advocacy Officer, where she continued to advocate on behalf of Iowans.
“I am very much looking forward to starting my new role at the Department of Corrections," said Sellmeyer. "I am excited to work with such a dedicated team and contribute to the important mission of this agency.”
“We are thrilled to have Sonya join the team," said Assistant Deputy Director for Prison Operations, Deanne Krumm. "Her background in advocacy and her proven commitment to public service will be a tremendous asset to our work and to the people we serve.”
